2021 Report

NorCal Resist

Our Story

Who we are:

We're community members organizing for a better world.
  • We stand in opposition to policies, politicians, and systems that harm our communities
  • We are building the better world we want to live in.
  • Our mission is to fight injustice through making a positive impact in our communities by holding educational events and trainings, organizing actions, and maintaining a variety of resources and programs that provide support to those in need.

How it started:

In 2016, a group of local activist, labor organizers, community organizers, and concerned individuals came together to prepare to protect our undocumented community if Trump were to win. Our first project was to develop a Migra Watch program that was ready to activate legal observers, accompaniers, immigration attorneys in case of an ICE raid at work or at home. The Migra Watch consisted of a hotline, know your rights, trainings, legal observers, and accompaniers. 5 years later, we have expanded our programs to include brake light clinics, community fix it clinics, food distributions, bail and bond fund, and so much more!

Migra Watch

A rapid response network that defends against local ICE activity.

Deportation Defense

We provide resources and material support to ICE detainees and their families, including but not limited to:
  • Connecting detainees and their families to legal resources
  • Campaigning for the release of ICE detainees through petitions, call in campaigns, press releases, rallies and political actions
  • Fundraising for commissary, legal fees, phone calls, transportation, and other financial needs of ICE detainees and their families
  • Visiting and writing letters to ICE detainees
  • Providing transportation for families visiting their loved ones in detention

Know Your Rights Trainings

ICE and law enforcement routinely use coercion and intimidation to incriminate and detain their targets, gain access to homes and vehicles, and more. Being able to assert your rights in these situations is your first line of defense against these deceptive tactics.

Our Know Your Rights trainings cover the basics of safely navigating encounters with ICE and law enforcement, including:
  • Your rights and how to assert them
  • How to navigate encounters with ICE/law enforcement
  • What to do if ICE comes to your door

We conduct Know Your Rights trainings for community organizations, faith groups, public and private events in English and Spanish.

Pro Se Clinics

In 2018, we worked with community partners, local immigration attorneys, organizers, and activists in establishing the Sacramento region's first pro se asylum clinical program. We have assisted hundreds of asylum seekers file their I-589 Application for Asylum and I-765 Application for Employment Authorization.

With the onset of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, we knew our Afghan refugee community would need help bringing their families to safety, therefore, we expanded our program to assist with humanitarian parole applications.
In 2021, NCR submitted over 700 Humanitarian Parole applications & funded approximately $75,000 in fees

Bail/Bond Fund

NorCal Resist's bail fund helps community members facing protest and ICE-related charges make bail, so they can fight their charges at home with their loved ones instead of in a jail cell.

Our bail program is funded by donations from the community. Unlike predatory bail bondsman services, which pocket a percentage of the bond money for a profit, our bail fund is a community resource that provides bonds for free, to those who need them most.
In 2021, NCR posted 100 protest bails and ICE bonds.

Accompaniment

We continue to accompany community to court appearances, ICE check-ins, and other appointments that can be scary and stressful.

Sponsorship

We are currently sponsoring 4 Asylum Seeking families. We provide them with housing, groceries, cash assistance, accompaniment, and other support.

In 2021, we celebrated the marriage of our LGBTQ couple and welcomed two healthy baby boys!

DACA Grants

Although DACA doesn't offer a path to citizenship, it offers the ability for folks to stay to go to school and/or work without fear of deportation. Many DACA recipients cannot afford the $495 application fee. NorCal Resist offers grants to cover the cost of the DACA application fee to ensure that folks are protected.
In 2021 NCR funded $17,325
in DACA application fees

Day Laborer Outreach

Our Day Laborer Outreach program provides our local jornaleros with worker rights information, toiletries, gloves, socks, and support.

“Practicing mutual aid is the surest means for giving each other and to all the greatest safety, the best guarantee of existence and progress, bodily, intellectual and moral.”

-Peter Kropotkin, Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution
