KQED: Immigrant Advocates Sound Alarm Over Escalating COVID-19 Outbreak in Yuba County Jail
Immigrant advocates say a growing outbreak of COVID-19 at the Yuba County Jail is putting the people held there at risk, including some who are medically vulnerable. On Dec. 16, officials closed the facility to visits after they identified seven confirmed cases. Since then, the number of people infected has increased to 78, which is more than 30% of the total jail population. Read more...

The nonprofit group NorCal Resist provides direct cash assistance to asylum-seekers and undocumented community members in the Sacramento area. It says it has assisted over 1,025 families across Northern California with over $220,000 in emergency aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s really hard,” said Autumn Gonzalez, an organizer with Norcal Resist, an immigrant rights organization located in the Bay Area. Because the fund relies mainly on community support and they don’t have any grant funding, “We’re going to see people evicted [and] enter that cycle of homelessness,” Gonzalez said of the worst-case scenario. “Going down that road would be a nightmare for so many thousands of families.” Read more...

By 10 a.m. Sunday, hundreds of protesters, many masked to protect themselves and others from COVID-19, gathered on all four corners of Kettleman Lane and Lower Sacramento Road. SN&R: Songs for social justice
Several bands reached out to SN&R to say they are giving their first-Friday Bandcamp proceeds to activist organizations. Venitian Veil, a band with a darker sound, explains its choice to donate proceeds: “We don’t make much from our music, so we thought a week’s worth of proceeds would go further. It seemed the least we can do, as financially stable people, to support the protesters out there putting their asses on the line, fighting for a better tomorrow. We chose NorCal Resist." Read more...

Fox 40: Steinberg applauds curfew but community leaders say it does more harm than good
After the first night of a new curfew in Sacramento, police say they made 50 arrests and 48 were people who were violating that curfew. Community group NorCal Resist issued a statement Tuesday afternoon demanding charges against all protesters in custody to be dropped, citing some bail amounts set as high at $250,000. Read more...

“A lot of them worked in restaurants, hotels all those service jobs that you see and are essential,” said NorCal Resist volunteer Jazmin Luna. Luna said the nonprofit is stepping in to help. They’re launching a fundraising campaign specifically to give these families money for rent. In just a week, they’ve given $25,000 in rent assistance to roughly 60 families across Sacramento.
