Two groups of Venezuelan migrants were flown to Sacramento last week by a Texas agency directing the travelers to a nonexistent immigration check-in location, an advocacy group told The Times on Wednesday. Immigrant rights groups Mijente and NorCal Resist, along with several individuals, sued Clearview AI, a secretive facial-recognition company, for providing police and the Alameda district attorney access to its image database of more than 3 billion photos scraped from the web and social media. More than 50 people attended an event focused on gun violence, including members of local activist and civil rights groups. Sacramento has been rocked by several mass shootings in recent months, including an incident downtown along K Street that claimed six lives and injured a dozen others. Chico ER: Local nonprofit to host free brake light repair day
Two nonprofit groups will be repairing brake lights and headlights free of charge on Saturday. The event is hosted by Chico Democratic Socialists of America in collaboration with NorCal Resist, who regularly hosts brake light repair events based in Sacramento. Juan Araujo is an organizer with the Chico Democratic Socialists of America and said the main goal of the light repair program is to limit the amount of police interactions because of a headlight. It costs $575 per person, including infants, and over the course of these clinics NorCal Resist has spent about $70,000 in application fees, funds that NorCal Resist largely raised themselves during the process.
